To drive a car on Indian roads, you must have a driver’s licence that is currently valid and issued by the regional transport authority of your state. You may easily apply online or offline for a driving licence, depending on what is most convenient for you. Furthermore, bear in mind that obtaining a driver’s licence should be contingent upon obtaining a learner’s licence. This page explains the whole process of applying for both a learner’s permit and a driver’s licence using available methods.
Objectives of a Driving Licence
One essential document needed to drive on public roads is a driver’s licence. People must travel to government offices to apply for a driver’s licence. It is a waste of time to visit government agencies. The Indian government has implemented an online portal application system for driving licences to address this issue. Indian nationals may now apply for a driving licence without having to go to any government offices. All they need to do is visit the official website to apply. People may now obtain a driver’s licence while lounging at home. Much time and money will be saved by doing this.
Documents Required
- The most current bills, LIC insurance, a valid passport, an Aadhar card, a national voter ID card, and other documents might serve as proof of age for applicants.
- As proof of address, PAN cards, birth certificates, school leave certificates, and SSLC certificates can all be utilised.
- Three passport-sized pictures must be sent with an application for a driving licence.
- A Driver Training Certificate may also be shown by the applicant if they are looking to obtain a commercial driver’s licence.
The Driver Licencing Department may still request other papers from you in addition to the ones listed above. It is recommended that you browse the official website of the Driver Licencing Department for information on certificates and paperwork.
Kinds of driver’s licences
There are four different kinds of driver’s licences available:
Learner’s Licence (LL): To apply for a commercial or permanent licence, you must hold a learner’s licence. The applicant may file for the permanent licence one month after the LL is issued, or thirty days after the LL expires. This is good for six months after it’s issued.
Permanent Driving Licence: For private transport requirements, like transporting a child to school or someone else shopping, this is required. The applicant may keep this for 20 years or until they are 50, whichever comes first.
Commercial Driving License: Transporting people in a heavy-passenger motor vehicle (HPMV) or moving goods in a medium–, light-, or heavy-duty vehicle (MGV) both require a commercial driver’s licence. This is for three years.
International Driving Permit: Driving abroad requires an international driving permit, which is valid for just one year. Candidates need to reapply when it expires, as it cannot be renewed.
